Polder with moored boat near Amsterdam

This painting, 'Polder with moored boat near Amsterdam', has only recently been added to the collection as a long term loan to the museum. Depicted is a barge in one of the small waterways around Amsterdam. Mondriaan has painted the barge with swift brushstrokes. In the background we see the city of Amsterdam. On the left hand side is the Royal Wax Candle Factory, which Mondriaan painted that same year.

Around the time when the artist painted this factory it was known for the thick fumes it expelled. The artist knew the area quite well since, at the time, he was living in the vicinity of the factory on the Ruysdaelkade. Curiously, he has signed the painting twice. In the lower left hand corner he signed the painting 'Piet Mondriaan’, but in lower right hand corner he signed with just his last name.
