Ponchatoula is the second largest city in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. William Akers, a leader in the temperance movement that emphasizes alcohol’s’ negative effect on health, personalities, and family lives is credited with the founding of Ponchatoula. In 1839, Akers bought 1000 acres and harvest the local pine timber with the help of Native Americans, who provided the name Ponchatoula, a way of expressing beauty, particularly towards the Spanish moss hanging from oak trees within the area....
