Portrait of an Elderly Gentleman

Leighton acquired this portrait through the artist, collector and dealer Charles Fairfax Murray. Leighton owned seven works attributed to Tintoretto, and this particular portrait can be seen in contemporary images of the house, hanging in the silk room above the fireplace – where it hangs today. Tintoretto was evidently an important artist for Leighton and undoubtedly, he would have placed great store in such a striking and accomplished portrait.
