Study for a Portrait of Miss Dene

This portrait was originally recorded in the museum’s catalogue as Mrs Williams, but now appears to be a study for a portrait of Miss Dene. Loose brush strokes and fiery colours give this painting a vivacity and energy which complements the youth of the sitter. Leighton first met Dorothy Dene (real name Ada Pullen) in 1879, and her and her sisters became some of Leighton’s favourite models, sitting for many of his works including Clytie 1895-6, Flaming June 1895 and Needless Alarms 1886.
