Rustic Music

Rustic Music belongs to a genre of so-called ‘fancy pictures,’ small often decorative pieces which were easy to sell, which Leighton exhibited alongside his major exhibition works at the Royal Academy. This painting is in fact one of a pair, the companion piece ‘Duett’ was purchased by Queen Victoria and remains in the Royal Collection. The sitter was John Hanson Walker, a protégé of Leighton’s who with his help and encouragement, went on to become an artist.
