Saint Ulrich from Maximilian`s sepulchral monument at Innsbruck Court Chruch

A master of self-presentation, Maximilian wanted to create everlasting monuments to himself and to the Habsburg Dynasty. To this end, he engaged the stellar artists of the age, such as court painter Jörg Kölderer. Maximilian had commissioned his sepulchral monument as early as 1502—still a king at the time. It would take until after 1580 to complete. The ensemble of bronze figures are in Innsbruck’s court chapel that was built for this purpose. Maximilian’s ancestors guard the tomb, the monumental “Schwarze Mander” (“Black Men,” describing the black bronze). Twenty-three small statues of the Habsburgs’ patron saints, among them Saint Ulrich, are on the balcony. The following image shows the church interior.
