Side chair (65.243)

Unknown Artist

Neoclassical, mahogany, child's shield back side chair. The shield back has a serpentine crest rail, and a pierced central splat. At the top of the splat is a carved design meant to resemble a wheel and its spokes. Underneath this wheel and spoke design the splat narrows and terminates in a semi-circle. From the center of the wheel, two pendent slats drape the center of the shield and terminate at either side of the back. The shield back is supported by two curved back posts that are rectangular in shape. Below the shield, the posts have a slight curved rake. The front legs are straight and rectangular in shape and terminate in spade feet. The upholstered seat is bell-shaped with a modified serpentine front. The seat is covered with a damask textile of red and gold.
