Peter and John curing the Lame Man

In the centre Peter holds the hand of the lame man while John blesses him. The setting of the miracle was the gate of the Temple in Jerusalem. Raphael based the ornate, twisted columns on ancient examples in St Peter’s, Rome, that were thought to have come from Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem.

Copy made 1729–31 from an original cartoon (preparatory drawing) for tapestries in the Sistine Chapel of 1515–16.

Given by Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford, in 1800
