Arthur Hughes, portrait study for 'The Proscribed Royalist'

This is a preparatory drawing for a figure in one of Millais’s early paintings. Arthur Hughes, a fellow student at the RA Schools, recalled meeting Millais in the RA Library and being asked if he would "sit for a head in his picture, 'The Proscribed Royalist'. I went and sat five or six times. He painted me in a small back room on the 2nd floor of the Gower Street house."
