Sir Martin Archer Shee

Sir Martin Archer Shee (1769-1850), Portrait painter and President of the Royal Academy.

This self-portrait shows Shee as a good-humoured and ambitious 25-year-old. Although Shee's early career was overshadowed by Sir Thomas Lawrence, he succeeded him as President of the Royal Academy from 1830 to 1850.
