Jean Simmons

Jean Merilyn Simmons (1929-2010), Actress.

This portrait was made in 1946, when seventeen-year-old Simmons portrayed Estella in David Lean's adaptation of Dickens's Great Expectations. Many years later, she took the role of Miss Havisham in a television adaptation of the same novel (1991). She married the actor Stewart Granger in 1950, and he commissioned this portrait from Matthew Smith as a gift for Simmons.
