Sir Oliver Cromwell (1563–1655)

This is thought to be a painting of Cromwell’s uncle, namesake and godfather Sir Oliver aged about 20, most likely painted by the Flemish artist Custodis.

As the older brother, Sir Oliver inherited the Cromwell estates including Hinchingbrooke House; Cromwell's father Robert asthe second son did not. Sir Oliver regularly entertained King James I at Hinchingbrooke, the cost of which forced him into debt, which he cleared by selling the mansion to the Montagu family in 1627. Sir Oliver retired to a second manor at Ramsey, where he supported the Royalist cause during the Civil War.
