Sonia Sanchez

Born September 9, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama

Sonia Sanchez has written poetry, short stories, plays, and children’s books. Prolific and controversial, she has been a skillful innovator in the use of urban Black English, eloquent profanity, and colorfully precise imagery. Her publications include We a BaddDDD People (1970), A Blues Book for Blue Black Magical Women (1974), and I’ve Been a Woman: New and Selected Poems (1981). Throughout her career, Sanchez taught at San Franciso State University, Amherst College, and Temple University, where she was the first Presidential Fellow. She has received many distinguished awards including the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Humanities, the PEN Writing Award, and the Harper Lee Award.
