The Bank of England Printing Works, 5.45pm

In 1957, the Bank of England commissioned Feliks Topolski to sketch its newly-opened Printing Works in Debden, Essex. This drawing shows men and women streaming out of the staff entrance at the end of the working day.

The high concrete roof arches of the two production halls create a distinctive silhouette in the background. The Main Production Hall, on the left, was the setting for most of Topolski’s drawings of the staff at work in 1957.

Today, the Bank of England’s banknotes are still designed and printed at these works.
