The Bedroom
Accessed via its own small lobby, Leighton's bedroom, dressing room and toilet were discreetly tucked away from the more public areas of the house. Other than two servants' rooms immediately above it and the butler's room in the basement, the house contained no other bedroom accommodation. This was Leighton's only truly private space in a home that was so much about presentation and display. The contrast with the other interiors is striking. Modest in scale, with more conventional doors, architraves and skirtings, the room is decorated in a commercially available wallpaper designed by the architect George Girlbert Scott and hung with reproductions of works that Leighton admired. Leighton died in this room in January 1896. His final works were 'My love to the [Royal] Academy'. He then spoke to his two sisters in German, determined as ever to separate his public and private worlds.
