Tissot: The Hon. Mrs Bridget Gunning, 1758
The Hon. Bridget Bourke (1716-1770), a descendant of Gráinne O’Malley the ‘Pirate Queen of Connacht’ married Colonel John Gunning, of County Roscommon. Her two famously beautiful daughters, Maria and Elizabeth, reputedly appeared on the Dublin stage and captivated London society. Maria married the Earl of Coventry and Elizabeth the Duke of Hamilton – and secondly the Duke of Argyll.
