The Madonna of the Candelabra

This relief was in Leighton’s collection at the time of his death in 1896 and was sold at a Christie’s sale later that year. The piece returned to the Museum in 2006 and has been rehung in its original position in the silk room. Leighton was profoundly influenced by Italian Renaissance art of the 15th and 16th centuries. Antonio Rossellino (1427-1479) was part of a renowned family of Florentine sculptors and trained under his older brother Bernardo. Antonio Rossellino is best known for reliefs of the Madonna and Child such as this, which he produced in both marble and terracotta. Acquired in 2007 with the generous support of The Art Fund, the ACE/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, and private donations.
