Tile featuring Minerva

This tile shows Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. In the 1930s, the Bank of England hired architect Herbert Baker to create a new building on its Threadneedle Street site. The Bank commissioned these hand-painted ceramic tiles to decorate the interior of the new building. Other designs include Britannia, lions guarding a bank of coins, and Pythagoras, an ancient philosopher and mathematician.
