True Indigo

True Indigo is a wall sculpture in four parts, adapted from a temporary site-specific ceramic installation that was placed on the Robert Clive monument in Westminster. The work questioned how we engage today with statues of divisive figures from Britain’s colonial past. The plaits allude to the unseen millions who died in the Bengal famine, which occurred in part because of the ruthless policies of Clive and the East India Company, including the forced cultivation of more profitable crops such as indigo instead of food. The models of plaits were hand carved in plaster and then slip cast in porcelain.
