Ivory Ticket

Unknown Artist

In the 19th century ivory discs or ‘bones’ identified RA students and indicated which of the Schools they attended. This disc was owned by George Philip Reinagle, admitting him to the Antique School.

These discs also gave students free entry to the Summer Exhibition. The system was introduced in 1800 after a committee found the RA Schools to be full of "confusion and disorder".
