Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
Among the ten principal avataras (Dashavataras) of Vishnu, Varaha (boar) is the third incarnation. At the time of creation, as Bhudevi, the Earth goddess, sank into the waters, Vishnu took the form of a boar and lifted her up from the deep. He then divided the earth into seven great continents.
