The cult of Vithoba or Vitthala is popular in Karnataka and Maharashtra. The painting depicts Vitthala standing on a brick with his hands resting on his hips. He is flanked by Tukaram (1608-49), one of the most famous poet-saints from Maharashtra on his left and probably Kanhoba, Tukaram's younger brother, on his right.
