Wall mirror (5232)

Gilded mirror in late neoclassical horizontal frame. Made of gilt, gesso, wood, and a single glass plate. The cornice has an applied beading. A large carved eagle on applied panel provides central motif for wide frieze. The eagle is flanked by double twist-turnings, which are also applied to side frame members. Stylized foliate ornament is applied to capitals. Previous restoration is evident, but some loss of gilt still is occurring.

Gesso is mixture of plaster of paris (gypsum) and other material used mainly by sculptors for the decoration of furniture.
