Wallet (84.10.3)

Coin purse made of dark brown leather with hinged brass frame and exterior "snap" fastener. Two rectangular leather panels with rounded corners glued to hinged brass frame. Thin accordion-pleated leather strips extend on either side; cardboard inserts divide interior into three compartments. Additional inner compartment concealed by brass framework fastened with sliding brass catch. Interior lined with blue silk moire, except for leather membrane, lined with blue lightweight silk fabric. Pleated leather stretched over outside framework, leaving hinge, corners and fastener exposed. Incised foliate design on brass framework.

Provenance Narrative Gift of Mrs. Elizabeth Humphrey Hallam, who said the purse belonged to John Dickinson. This was likely to be John Allen Dickinson (b. 1807 in Philadelphia) or John Allen Dickinson, Jr. (b. 1786 in Philadelphia).
