Washerwomen

During the 1870s, Boldini painted a number of landscapes in suburban locations outside Paris. In this scene, he recorded the sunlit figures, foliage, and water with broad touches of the brush. Both the subject and the handling recall the work of the emerging Impressionist artists. Boldini also made a more detailed painting of the same scene, for which this small-scale work may have served as a preparatory sketch.
