Here we see a protest painting by Louis Nijhuis, a painter from the Achterhoek. It was made in 1980, the year the municipality of Winterswijk made plans to demolish Mondriaan’s dilapidated former residence. A large storm cloud looms above the villa, the paintings of Piet Mondriaan are scattered across the street and the ground is sinking beneath the church. Through the windows of the house we can see the ghost of Mondriaan between the skyscrapers of New York.

Fortunately, the house was saved. Mr and Mrs Nijhuis, not related to the artist, bought it in the 1980s and restored the villa to its former glory....
