Bruce Moore

1905 - 1980

Bruce was born in Bern, KS and grew up around Pratt, KS. He moved to Wichita at the age of 12 in 1917. He became a part of the Wichita art culture at a very young age. He attended the Kansas City Art Institute during a summer vacation from high school. To placate his father, he attended a business school in Fort Worth, TX in 1921. He studied at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 1922-1926. From 1927-1929 he was an Instructor at Fairmount College (now Wichita State University). He worked in Paris 1929-1931 on a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. He returned to Wichita and taught at WSU 1931-1933. From 1934-1950 he lived and sculpted in the New York City area, although he was drafted into the army from 1943-1944. He was Director of the Rinehart School of Sculpture of the Maryland Institute in Baltimore Maryland (1942-1943 and 1945-1949). In 1950 he moved his studio to Washington, DC. He passed away in 1980 in Washington, DC.
