Robert Ebendorf was born in Topeka, KS and received his BFA in 1958 and MFA in 1963 from the University of Kansas. He received a Fulbright scholarship to State School of Arts & Crafts in Norway. He was a Professor of Art at University of Georgia and the State University of New York (1971-1989) and a Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor (2004 - 2016) at East Carolina University School of Art. Founding member and past president of the Society of North American Goldsmiths. He is internationally known. He was a 2019 Penland School of Craft Outstanding Artist Educator. He has exhibited in more than 30 museums around the world, including a 2003-2004 exhibit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He travels the country and abroad lecturing, teaching and exhibiting. He often uses found objects along with precious metals in his works.
