A Rock And A Soft Place

Bulging from the wall and pinned down at the edges, the two parts of this piece converse with one another. Masculine is wedded with feminine. Using typically and art-historically male construction materials, and traditionally female soft body form, gendered colour palettes are also at play.

"I am interested in the juxtaposition of form and material, and how the hardness and softness of bodies and genitalia are often so synonymous with the strength and fragility that sex and gender can bring about, even, and especially, where these conceptions are absurd. Stemming from thoughts around assigned, and often inevitable, roles within relationships and gender, the materials in this piece stand as a metaphor. While plaster and concrete recall their former liquidity and threaten to burst from their skins, these palpably tempting surfaces are in fact solid; set in their ways. An admission that some things do not change."
