This drawing and 1975.1.404 originally formed a single sheet that may have been part of a sketchbook. The two male figures, dressed in armor and bearing a spear, sword, and sphere, may represent heroes from a cycle of famous men or a chronicle of the world. The drawings, whose origin has been described as Sienese or Florentine, may be attributed to Arcangelo di Cola da Camerino, a painter from the Marches region (central eastern Italy), who was also active in Florence in the early 1420s and whose work reveals the influence of contemporary Florentine artists.
