Thought to be by Cuyp when acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford, and engraved as such by P.J. Arendzen for Hofstede de Groot’s Master-Pieces of Dutch Art in English Collections in 1899, Cattle on a River Bank was re-attributed to Calraet in the 1928 Wallace Collection Catalogue. It bears the monogram associated with a group of pictures long thought to be by Cuyp and now generally attributed to Calraet.
