Antonio was part of an artistic dynasty. His father and grandfather were painters and engravers. Antonio was taught by his uncle, Carlo Zucchi and travelled through Italy from 1750 to 1760, sketching ancient monuments and ruins. He then travelled to London and worked on decorative paintings for the interiors of Osterley Park, Caen Wood and Luton House, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1770 to 1784. In 1781 he married the artist Angelica Kauffman, and collaborated with her on the decoration of Home House, London, designed by Robert Adam.
