Artist's Father

This formal bust-length portrait of George Watts facing the viewer is one of only two known portraits of the artist’s father.

The portrait displays a dark palette, showing the sitter in formal dress with a stiff high collar, with a distinctive hairstyle. Painted when the artist was just seventeen or eighteen, the portrait of his father provides early insight into the development of Watts’s treatment of portraiture as a genre that won him international fame.
