Throughout his career, Leighton completed a number of half length and three-quarter length paintings of models. Rather than acting as portraits, which aim to capture the sitter’s identity and personality, these works focus on the idealised beauty of the sitter. In Bianca, Leighton has focused on the model’s aesthetic qualities: contrasting the sitter’s pale, delicate skin with the rich gold of the background and the soft folds of her dress, punctuated by velvety black ribbon....
