Charles Henri Ford

Charles Henri Ford was a poet, editor, novelist, artist, and legendary cultural catalyst. In 1933, Ford wrote The Young and Evil, now often called the first gay novel. The novel provides vignettes into the vibrant gay culture of New York City, including encounters with drag queens of the ball scene. One satin-clad queen teases, “You should have come in drag ... you look like something [Charles] Lindbergh dropped on the way across [the Atlantic].”
