Shuttlecocks, with their bold orange base and feathered top, transform the lawn and building into a gigantic court for a game of badminton, where the Nelson-Atkins building becomes the net. In 1994, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art commissioned Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen to make a contemporary artwork specifically for the lawn. Oldenburg and van Bruggen often created monuments from seemingly popular objects. Frozen in a continuous game, the four Shuttlecocks offer a playful invitation to visitors to experience the museum as a place for fun and creativity.
