These candlesticks are based on models by Corneille Van Clève and closely follow one of his designs shown in two drawings in the Art Library of the Berlin State Museums. They are similar in this respect to F30-31 and F80-81 also in the Wallace Collection, but their construction is different (their candleholders are screwed onto a central steel rod rather than brazed onto the heads of the infants), they are more cursorily chased, and they are electro-gilded, all of which suggests they are mid-nineteenth-century castings of one of the two Van Clève designs. The original pairing would have comprised a male and female figure, rather than the two females depicted on this 'pair', suggesting that at some stage two pairs have been confused, either deliberately or by accident.
