Count Ugolino della Gherardesca with his Sons and Grandsons in Prison

Scene from the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri of a group of figures in a prison cell interior. At left, seated, the Count Ugolino raises his hands, helplessly. The younger grandson kneels before his grandfather praying for food, his arm outstretched. Behind, a group of three other boys in the central rear, one reclining upon the floor. At right, a skull under a beam of light entering through a barred window. Shackles mounted to the wall at left and right.
