Cup (67.247)

Silver two-handled cup. Inverted pear-shaped body supported on a high applied splayed foot. Double scroll handle featuring acanthus leafage and volutes. Circumventing the body is a bright cut design of garlands with pendant medallions suspended from stylized bow knots. A band of wiggles work and dotted lines boarder the rim and a band of guilloche with central punches boarders the splayed foot.

Provenance Narrative The "CA" engraved on it stands for Christopher Abbott to whom the cup was awarded for seaman valor in England. Mr. Abbott lived on the Isle of Mann. The cup was brought to Buffalo, NY on Sept. 5, 1834, by Christopher's brother Joseph on the ship Mersey. It passed to Joseph's niece Henrietta Nelson Head, then to Olive E. Nelson (who was 99 years old in 1984).
