Joseph Joachim, a Hungarian violinist, conductor, and composer, was widely regarded as one of the most significant violinists of the 19th century. A protégé of Felix Mendelssohn, Joachim later served Franz Liszt as concertmaster. He was a close friend of Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann, and frequently performed with Clara Schumann.
