The 1786 Tignon Law of Louisiana was organized to oppress affluent women of African descent. It reads, "The distinction which exsits in the hair dressing of the colored people, from the others, is necessary for same to subsist ad order the quadroon and negor women, wear feathers, nor curls in the hair, coming same flat or covering it with a handkerchief if it is combed high as was formerly the custom." Creole women rebelled and decorated their headwraps through form, color and texture as well as adding objects.
