Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich (1625-72)

Montagu lived at Hinchingbrooke House, was educated at Huntingdon Grammar School (today the Cromwell Museum) and served as an admiral to both Oliver Cromwell and Charles II. He supported the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, transporting Charles II to England on his flagship 'Naseby', wich was hastily renamed 'Royal Charles'. As a reward he was given an Earldom.

Montagu's cousin was the diarist Samuel Pepys, who also attended Huntingdon Grammar School, and for whom he acted as a patron.
