The Tears of St Peter

A favourite subject of El Greco’s, this painting is the earliest of at least six versions by the master. Saint Peter, represented in the extreme foreground, clasps his hands in prayer as he repents his betrayal of Christ after denying him three times. El Greco emphasises the Saint’s spiritual concentration by his upward, tearful gaze towards Heaven. The subject was probably inspired by

contemporary Italian poems such as Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of Saint Peter) by Luigi Tansillo (1510-1568) that narrated Peter’s sorrow after his denial of Christ. This theme became increasingly important as it concerned the Sacrament of Penance that was assiduously promoted during the Catholic Reformation.
