The numerous tiny sketchbooks that have survived reveal both a deep sympathy for her subjects and an impressive technical facility.

Her drawings fall into two main groups: the line drawings are swiftly and economically rendered, often witty but never unkind; while the pen and wash ones, and the more tonal pencil drawings tend to be more introspective and atmospheric, and are often tinged with melancholy.
