Engraving of a view of Georgetown and Washington City, by George Cooke, published in 1812. Original artist unknown. Inscription indicates Cooke was granted permission to engrave the image.
In the foreground, a road meanders through the countryside. In the distance the viewer sees ships in the harbor and on the Potomac River, and buildings along the shoreline. Mason's Island is clearly defined.
Provenance Narrative
This print closely resembles an engraving by T. Cartwright after a work drawn by George Beck, and published by Atkins and Nightingale, London. Both George Beck and George Isham Parkyns' drawings of this subject may have inspired this engraving by George Cooke. These views may be seen in "Picturing America, 1497-1899" by Gloria Gilda Deak.
