George Washington

Bust length, oil on canvas portrait of George Washington.

Washington is depicted in his mid-50s, wearing his Continental Army uniform. He is turned partially towards the viewer's right and gazes straight ahead towards the viewer. His brows are dark and thin, and his eyes are sunken and heavy-lidded. His nose is straight and his lips are small and thin. His cheeks are ruddy and some stubble is visible above his upper lip. His mouth is upturned into a relaxed expression. He wears a dark blue uniform coat with a wide, buff-colored collar. Three large, round dark-colored buttons line the lapel. Underneath is a buff-colored waistcoat lined with smaller round buttons. He wears a white frilled cravat around his neck. A light colored corded epaulettes is visible on his left shoulder (viewer's left).

Provenance Narrative The portrait's subject, George Washington (1732-1799), was the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and the President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. This portrait is a much later reproduction of a well known 1787 portrait by Charles Willson Peale.
