This altarpiece is known in Spanish as a retablo, meaning it is composed of multiple scenes related to a single theme, in this case the life of the Virgin Mary. It is one of the most complete of its kind to survive in an American public collection. Reading from top to bottom, the scenes are arranged as follows: Left-hand side: 1. The Annunciation 2. The Adoration of the Magi 3. The Ascension of Christ Center: 1. The Death of the Virgin 2. The Virgin and Child Enthroned with Angels Right-hand side: 1. The Adoration of the Shepherds 2. The Resurrection of Christ 3. Pentecost The nine small paintings along the bottom form the predella. Flanking the Entombment of Christ in the center are from left to right: Saint Anthony Abbot, Saint Margaret, Saint Peter, the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint Paul, Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint John the Baptist.
