Howitzer - 24-pounder Howitzer and Field Carriage

Short barrel with a large bore cast by Samuel Eccles

This type of howitzer (high-angle artillery piece) was designed by Lieut. General William Millar. Following the Napoleonic Wars Millar conceived, two new bronze howitzers, a 12-pounder and a 24-pounder, to replace the 4 2/5-in Coehorn and the 5 1/2-in Royal howitzers in both field and horse artillery batteries. These guns were introduced in 1820 after experimentation and practice in 1819.

These howitzers were much longer than the older weapons, being 10 calibres in length. In profile they were similar to guns being smaller bronze versions of the iron-shell guns that Millar also introduced into the service at about the same time. This howitzer continued in general service until 1861 when it was replaced by the Armstrong gun.
