Gun - Saker and replica carriage

The Saker was a medium-sized artillery piece named after the saker falcon and typically featuring a long and slender barrel. This example is dated to the 1540s (the date appears on the gun but unfortunately the last digit is indistinct). The muzzle is damaged.

The gun was founded at Houndsditch by John and Robert Owen who had another foundry in Calais, which was English territory at the time. The brothers were appointed gunmakers to the King in 1546. In 1553, John was drowned in the Thames river at London Bridge, after which Robert seems to have ceased making guns. He died in 1571.
