Hand fan (92.272.1)

Unknown Artist

Folding Fan of printed and painted paper leaf and metallic silver embellishment with plain, bone sticks and guards. Fan has central printed scene of young woman being led by a cupid through a wooded clearing. A stone, temple-like structure sits in the background. The woman is depicted in a knee-length red and blue gown and a bonnet with two long necklaces, possible rosaries. She is led towards the stone structure by a small cupid figure. Area surrounding the scene is plain with small dots spread over the blank area that were likely once silver. Top of the leaf is edged in metallic tape.

Sticks are short and shaped. Both sticks and guards are unadorned, held together with brass rivet and hinge.

Provenance Narrative
The bonnet shape and hairstyle of the female figure date this fan to the early 1820s.
